About

No single stakeholder can solve unsafe medicines alone. Medicines for Africa exists to bridge that gap. As Africa's independent patient safety platform, we connect regulators, industry, healthcare professionals, patients, and communities to generate frontline intelligence and drive coordinated action that protects patients.

Our Vision

An Africa where no patient is harmed by unsafe medicines. To help build Africa's safest and most trusted medicines ecosystem, ensuring safe medicines, protected patients, and stronger health systems.

Our Mission

To protect African patients from medication-related harm by strengthening medicine safety through collaboration, awareness, prevention, detection, and action.

What we do

Focus on patients

Most organizations focus on medicines. Medicines for Africa focuses on what happens to patients.

Systems that work in practice

Most organizations focus on systems. Medicines for Africa focuses on whether those systems work in practice.

Working across sectors, acting earlier

Most organizations work within sectors. Medicines for Africa works across sectors. Most organizations respond to medicine safety problems after they emerge. Medicines for Africa helps identify risks earlier through frontline intelligence and coordinated action.

OUR WORK

Mobilising Collective Action to Prevent Medication-Related Harm

Unsafe medicines are not simply a regulatory challenge. They are a patient safety challenge. Medicines for Africa exists to help ensure that medicine safety systems work where they matter most: for patients.

OUR IMPACT AREAS

Why Medicines for Africa is different

Medicines for Africa is different because we use real world experiences from communities to catalyse impactful action  combining strategic insight, local expertise, and hands-on implementation to protect patients, strengthen regulatory systems, and secure safe access to medicines across complex African markets.

The Webinars

This webinar series was conceived because too often, the response to unsafe medicines focuses only on systems, policies, or technology while overlooking the people who are closest to the problem: patients, communities and frontline healthcare professionals.

Pharmacists, nurses, clinicians, supply chain officers, or community health workers are the last checkpoints before a medicine reaches a patient. The Medicines for Africa webinar series builds not just knowledge, but practical capability by bringing experts at the forefront of tackling the challenge of unsafe medicines in African communities.

The series is designed to use practical real life experiences to equip professionals working in African communities not just with information, but with the judgment, responsibility, and practical tools to actively reduce patient harm at every step. The program guides participants through a structured learning journey.

Community Youth Program

MFA Community Youth Program — Building Africa's frontline defense against unsafe medicines

The Medicines for Africa (MFA) Community Youth Program is a pan-African initiative designed to empower young leaders to become part of the frontline defence against unsafe medicines. Built around the flagship learning series "Building Frontline Defence Against Unsafe Medicines in Africa," the program translates technical knowledge into youth-led action, advocacy, and system strengthening.

What makes this program different?

We go beyond information to equip participants with:

  • Practical understanding of how medicines become unsafe
  • Tools to detect and report risks
  • Skills to engage communities
  • Leadership capacity to drive change
